Fernando Alonso registered the fastest lap on day two of pre-season Formula One testing on Wednesday ahead of world champion Sebastian Vettel.

Alonso clocked 1 minute 13.307 minutes for Ferrari, with Vettel on 1:13.614 for Red Bull. Former world champion Lewis Hamilton was fourth in a McLaren and Mark Webber 14th in the second Red Bull in his first outing of the pre-season.

Vettel became the youngest F1 champion last year at age 23 when he took the title from Alonso in the last race after a bungled Ferrari pit stop strategy. The Germany topped the opening pre-season testing on Tuesday in the new RB7.

Test results give no real indication of a team's strength because they are starting to set up their cars for the 20-race season starting on 13 March in Bahrain. The Valencia tests, one of four rounds of testing, end on Thursday.

Teams and drivers must get used to new rubber as Pirelli have replaced Bridgestone as sole tyre suppliers.
The 2011 season also sees the return of the KERS power-boosting system which is to make overtaking easier, as well as moveable rear wings.
