After Robert Kubica crash Lotus Renault GP searching another options for drivers, at least for the beginning of the season. With a selection of reserve drivers already at their disposal, are any at the level required to fill such a large pair of race boots, so large that they gave the Lotus Renault R31 fastest time at last weeks testing in Valencia?
Bruno Senna is perhaps the most experienced of the reserve drivers however his first season in 2010 for Hispania saw him in and out of the drivers seat being replaced at various races and eventually parting company with the team last month before being signed to Lotus Renault. Team Principal, Eric Boullier commented:
“I will give the one who is ready, and Bruno is the most ready driver”
Romain Grosjean and Fauruz Fauzy don’t have the experience with Grosjean failing to make a significant impression in 2010 and Fauzy only completing a series of test days for Lotus Racing last year. Another option for Boullier is to look outside his team and Kimi Raikkonen and Nico Hülkenburg are 2 drivers who spring to mind.
2007 World Champion Kimi Raikkonen was connected to a move to Renault in 2010 before Kubica re-signed and had talks with Eric Boullier. The 32 year old Finn was excited at the prospect of working with the team however talks never progressed and he remained in contract however without a drive to Ferrari for the year and now continues to drive for Citroen in the WRC.
Nico Hulkenburg is contracted to Force India as a test driver this year but with pole winner format at Brazil last season perhaps would be better served in a more race orientated role. Although Force India would be unlikely to want him to go to Lotus Renault, his management are reported to be open to an approach from the Enstone based team and given the choice, any driver would jump at the chance to get behind the wheel of what is looking to be a championship contending package in the R31.
