McLaren driver Jenson Button has said that they can still beat Red Bull Racing in the remainder of the 2011 Formula 1 season, as they are not so far behind them at the moment.
Button added that McLaren still have a good pace, so they can fight with Red Bull in order to challenge the 2011 championship.
The Brit mentioned, “Perhaps we've lost a bit of the momentum we'd built up in previous races, but not much. Although Silverstone was disappointing, our pace has been good this year. Sometimes we've been quickest, sometimes we haven't.”
The 31-year-old driver kicked off to a good season, as he successfully finished their initial races on the podium. He had a great time at the Canadian Grand Prix, where he achieved his race victory for the first time in the ongoing season. After getting positive results in Canada, Button was expecting to retain his position in the next race weekends. However, he could not impress at the European and the recently held British Grands Prix.
He retired from the Silverstone Grand Prix after a pitstop error caused him to abandon his race after 39 laps.
On the other hand, the team principal Martin Whitmarsh discussed the Silverstone race and said, “We missed an opportunity for a podium finish at Silverstone, and that race was a reminder that while we are always pushing to make our car even more competitive, our rivals are doing likewise with their own machinery.”
Button’s teammate Lewis Hamilton was 28.9 seconds slower than the Silverstone race winner Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso and finished his race at the fourth place. He had a close fight with Ferrari’s Felipe Massa for a few laps and ended up behind Red Bull’s Mark Webber.
McLaren are expecting better results from both of their drivers in the upcoming German Grand Prix which will be begin from Friday, July 22, 2011 in Nürburgring. Let’s see how Button and Hamilton manage their race over there.
