Cosworth is for Formula one (not only for Williams)

Cosworth general manager Mark Gallagher is adamant that losing Williams from their list of engine clients will not have a negative impact on their F1 future.

Last week, Williams confirmed that after two years of engine deal, they would be parting ways with Cosworth at the end of this season and swapping to Renault power units.

In making that announcement, the Grove-based team became the second client Cosworth has lost since returning to F1 at the start of the 2010 season.

And with just Hispania Racing and Virgin Racing still in their fold, there are some concerns about Cosworth's continued participation in F1.

However, Gallagher insists they are committed to the sport.

"It (Williams' departure) won't affect our future in F1," he told Manipe F1.

"We did the deal with three new teams to come back into Formula One in the late spring of 2009, that was with Virgin/Manor, Campos and USF1, and then unexpectedly in September we got Team Lotus and then unexpectedly in November we got Williams, so for a brief period we had five teams.

"We didn't envisage the return to Formula One featuring Williams. In fact we envisaged it featuring three new teams and we did our plan based on the worst case belief that at least one of the new teams would struggle and possibly go out of business.

"Each engine supply agreement with each team is profitable in its own right."

He added: "Cosworth as a company has supplied 67 Formula One teams with engines over the last 48 years, so we know that the role that we fulfill in F1 is to be a company that provides engines when teams want them.

"We also know that teams go off to car manufactures periodically, particularly when there is a car manufacturer offering a particularly lucrative or attractive deal.

"The fact is that we continue to be in F1, we have signed up for a V6 engine, the V8 engine has been extended for another year which is good for us and last week's announcement doesn't change in any way our commitment to F1 or our belief that we will be in F1 for the long-term."
