Just before his home grand prix in Spain, Fernando Alonso, the two-time Formula One world champion, extended his contract with Ferrari until the end of the 2016 season, the Italian team said.
Alonso, a 29-year-old Spaniard, joined Ferrari on a three- year contract in September 2009. He won two drivers’ championships with Renault for the year 2005, 2006.
“I immediately felt comfortable within Ferrari and now it feels to me like a second family,” Alonso said in an e-mailed statement.
"I have the utmost faith in the men and women who work in Maranello and in those who lead them."
“It is therefore natural for me to decide to extend my relationship in the long term like this, with a team at which I will no doubt end my Formula One career one day.”
Alonso has a ten year long career in Formula One, debuting with Minardi in 2001, spending next five years with Renault from 2002-2006. Joined Mclaren for 2007 and then returning to Renault for 2008 and 2009. He has been with Ferrari from 2010 and will continue to stay with the team till 2016.
He has 23 Grands Prix starts with Ferrari out of which, he has taken 5 wins, 11 podiums, 2 pole positions and 293 world championship points.
