KERS Redbull F1

KERS, short for Kinetic Energy Recovery System was introduced to Formula 1 during the 2009 season. In layman’s terms, it is a system which stores energy released during braking and this energy is used to make the car go faster for a brief period of time whenever the driver pushes a button on the steering wheel. In 2009, most teams discovered that the system’s weight itself was causing the cars to slow down and as a result lap times were getting compromised. Most teams dumped the system eventually.

Of course, in 2009, KERS was optional. Now though, in the 2011 F1 season, all teams will run KERS. As Mark Webber explains in the video, the boost from KERS reduces lap times by 0.3 sec. It does not look much, but in the world of Formula 1, 0.3 sec can win you a championship.
