Hispania Racing Team, HRT, has signed Italian driver Vitantonio Liuzzi to race this season.
Liuzzi was named second driver to teammate Narain Karthikeyan of India on Wednesday, 9th March, 2011.
Liuzzi has been racing in F1 since his debut for Red Bull in 2005, with stints at Toro Rosso and Force India, where he's raced since the end of the 2008 season.
“I am really happy to have signed this agreement,” said Liuzzi, who has also driven for Red Bull and Toro Rosso. I never lost hope to be in Formula One as I knew I have the experience and the right attributes for a young and ambitious team. I face a new challenge now and this excites me.”
HRT finished last out of 11 teams in the championship last season without a point.
Liuzzi was 15th overall with a career best 21 points last season.
HRT is being the last team to announce its driver line up. After month of speculation over the second driver, Tonio Liuzzi was selected as the second driver.
HRT was thoroughly criticized for paid driver seat and money crunched team.
But as it was earlier confirmed by Tonio Liuzzi that he is against the paid seat and will not pay to drive in F1.
Tonio Liuzzi is being selected for his performance and driving experience over other contenders. Former Force India Driver, had already made a lot of improvement in the HRT F110 last month when he had tested their car and from there he became the perfect choice for HRT.
