Vodafone McLaren are not taking the harmonious relationship between their drivers Lewis Hamilton (2008 world champion) and Jenson Button (2009 world champion) for granted and in fact admit they had their fair share of scares on the pit wall during the 2010 season.
“Any management team with cohesive drivers, who are working well together, would be mighty relieved. The guys are very competitive. We don’t expect them to be gentlemanly on the circuit,” said McLaren managing director Jonathan Neale in an interview with f1.com.
“I could see Lewis and Jenson tear round each other and pull away into the distance. I don’t think one would give much quarter to the other,” he admitted.
Perhaps in reference to nail biting wheel to wheel duel between Button and Hamilton during the Turkish Grand Prix, Neale pointed out, “I think the management will be sitting on the pit wall shuffling on our feet and wincing as we did on several occasions last year.”
It is clear the Working squad, who are not strangers to inner team strife, have extreme faith in their drivers as Neale said, “They are world champions, established great drivers with nothing to prove in terms of their competence. They know what they’re doing. They get in the car and get on with it.”
